Credit Consolidation Counseling

The act of counseling is a service provided by a professional to advise people about a specific issue. When the issue is in regard to credit, the service provided is no different.

Credit counseling occurs when people seek advice on how to deal with credit situations such as mounting medical bills, credit card debt, auto loans, etc. In credit consolidation counseling, professionals assist folks with how is the best way to combine these debts together in a manageable way in which to lower the payment, and possibly the interest rate.

There are a number of credit consolidation counseling firms in the industry, but one must take caution when “hiring” a credit counselor: many will simply charge large fees to negotiate a lower interest rate on credit debt, when that is something the debtor can do for themselves. A true credit consolidation counselor will not only negotiate with creditors on behalf of their client, they will review the habits that got them into debt as well as assist with a debt management plan to 1) pay down the debt, and 2) prohibit history from repeating itself.

To assist debtors with finding a reliable counselor, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling offers a website with information about locating an agency to assist with credit consolidation. One such agency is Consumer Credit Counseling Services, a non-profit organization that promotes financial well-being in addition to credit consolidation services. It is important to note that generally these services are not free; however, the fees charged are used to promote education and further the reach of these agencies.

With today’s economy and many folks losing jobs, it’s nice to know that there are options available for those whose debt climbs while job prospects fall. Credit consolidation counseling is a positive step for those who need a boost in the right direction and toward financial freedom.
